Future Retro Vol2 is the 3rd EP on Where We Met a project curated by Ricardo Piazza. The label hasn’t missed a beat so far on its first two releases and so its reassuring that the latest EP is a strong partner to Vol1. Featuring another collection of established and newer artists this record concentrates on sharper breaks and deep electro sounds. It compliments Vol1 which was a little more relaxed and an emphasis on warm, 4/4 deep techno.
This EP starts with a strong track from Reedale Rise who filled the entire 1st EP with his rich and intricate programming. More of the same here on Lucid Flow, solid percussion behind glorious strings & pads but the magic comes from a arpeggiated bassline and towards the end of the track, a sweet spoken vocal.
Reedale Rise is flourishing at the moment following a string of quality releases including those for Frustrated Funk. I am looking forward to where the productions go in the future. A track from Frustrated Funk label mate 214 completes side A. A punchier more mechanical track that maybe takes some Tour De France references from Kraftwerk and infuses them with some funk.
3 tracks on the B side and the 1st from M.A.D. Moxx and Digilog who have both appeared on their own Yoshi imprint and also impress here. It’s a slightly unhinged and jazzy workout with a thumping break beat, skittish percussion and expansive chords.
Loving its freestyle flavour.
Stuart Crosbie’s Psychic continues the mood more solid electro breakbeats, fat kicks and bassline that teases with its acidity and hypnotising its way into your brain. M Step is a new name to me but Rubber Triangle is a perfect way to represent the Future Retro aspirations. Its a sharp piece of contemporary techno but delves into the notebooks of Dr Blowfin’s laboratory.
In short a quality electro EP and good to see a new label establish itself further – will be keeping tabs on further progress.
